ATV Safety

ATV Safety

When it comes to driving an ATV, safety is always a priority! Even if you plan on selling your ATV, knowing how to safely drive an off-road vehicle is always a good thing. In addition to following the rules and regulations set by the state of Michigan, there are a few safety tips that guarantee that you will have a fun but secure time!

Rules and Regulations

First of all, let’s go over off-roading vehicle laws! The Department of Natural Resources provides a list of these codes that give people some basic guidelines to follow. These regulations include:

  • Operation-Age is Set at 16-year-olds
  • Prohibiting Operation in Public Hunting Grounds in November
  • Riding is Only Permitted on Forest Roads, Frozen Water, etc.

These are just a few of the rules that the state of Michigan requires you to follow.

ATV Safety Tips

So, what other things should you know before riding an ATV or a UTV? Well, you should always have the proper gear. Just like with any other power sports, you need to have the right equipment to protect yourself. That means putting on proper safety equipment such as:

  • Helmets
  • Goggles
  • Long-Sleeve Shirt
  • Long Pants
  • Closed-Toe Shoes

These items can protect you from minor or serious injuries while you are riding. There is additional protective gear that you can buy but you should at least use the basics above. Since it’s illegal to ride on the roads, we don’t need to mention any street riding. However, you should never be driving alone. Like it or not, riding an ATV can get dangerous. That is why you should have someone riding with you or alongside you. The buddy system will guarantee your safety while you are traveling down some of Michigan’s amazing OTV trails!

However, what about UTVs? The cool thing about UTVs is that they have more safety features such as:

  • 2 or More Seats Bolted in Next to Each Other
  • Roll Bars or Roll Cage
  • A Cargo Hold in the Back

However, some safety tips apply to these vehicles. Just like with ATVs, you should be wearing safety equipment. Even with the protection of a roll cage, protecting yourself should always be a priority. Also, you should keep your arms inside the UTV at all times. After all, the roll protection is pointless if your arms are outside of its protection. While there are kits that can make ATVs street-legal, most are not so keep them off the roads.

Most importantly, you need to drive within your capabilities. Unless you have extensive experience riding, you shouldn’t be riding an ATV or UTV like a pro racer. The best way to protect yourself is to drive safely and within your limits.
